Eyelid Surgery
(BLEPHAROPLASTY)

Upper and lower eyelid wrinkles caused by the relaxation of the skin can be improved and tightened.  The cut is made at the lid fold for the upper eyelid and at the lid margins for the lower.  The skin is lifted and the excess of skin, fat and muscle is removed and sutured.  The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and requires one day stay in the hospital.

The effects of aging are usually first noticed around the eyes. Loose skin develops in both the upper and lower eyelids, and fatty deposits (bags) cause bulging. These changes result in a sad and tired look. Excess skin of the upper eyelids can also impair vision. Blepharoplasty is the procedure that is designed to reverse these changes. The upper and lower eyelid corrections are most commonly done together. This is a relatively small surgery that can have a dramatic rejuvenating effect on the overall facial appearance. The incisions are placed in the skin creases of the upper lid, and usually on the inside surface of the lower eyelids, thus making them less visible. The excess skin and fatty tissue are carefully removed, and the wound is then meticulously closed. Special techniques are also available to deal with particular situations, such as occur in older patients who may suffer from drooping of the upper eyelid margin (ptosis), or who develop a droop of the lower eyelid (ectropion). Both of these problems can be corrected with special techniques. Dr. K. Ramachandran performs eyelid surgery under local anesthesia with conscious sedation with the patient having no discomfort and no recollection of the procedure. The Asian upper eyelid, can, if desired, be made to have a well-defined lid crease. Healing time for eyelid surgery is usually about one to two weeks. Make-up can be applied after the first week.
