Ear Correction Otoplasty is a procedure designed to reposition protruding ears into a more natural position closer to the head. Other deformities of the ear folds can also be corrected. School-aged children as young as six years-old are excellent candidates for corrective surgery, but otoplasty can be done at any later age and adulthood. A child having corrective surgery at an early age may avoid the teasing by his peers. It is common for children to be teased and called names, which can affect the normal psychological development. In very young children, general anesthetic is preferable. Older children and adults tolerate this surgery well under local anesthesia with conscious sedation. Otoplasty is performed through an incision that is placed behind the ear where the scars are less visible. A bandage is worn for two days after surgery to keep the ears in their new position, and an elastic headband is worn for four weeks at night following the surgery to protect the ears. Patients return to normal activities in about one week.
